Saint Pantaleon was a physician of Nicomedia who is honoured as a martyr of the early Church and venerated in both East and West as one of the holy healers.
Saint Pantaleon is venerated as a martyr of the early Church and, according to long tradition, as a physician of Nicomedia in Asia Minor who suffered for the faith in the great persecution at the beginning of the fourth century. His memory has been held in honour from ancient times in both the Eastern and the Western Church, and the 1962 Missal keeps his commemoration on the twenty-seventh of July.
What is reliably known
The detailed accounts of Saint Pantaleon’s life and passion belong to a later age and contain much that cannot be established with historical certainty. What endures in the constant tradition is that he was a true martyr, that he was remembered as a physician who served the sick without seeking reward, and that his cult was already widespread in the East at an early date. The Church honours him for the witness of his martyrdom, content to leave to God the things that the records cannot confirm.
In the Christian East he is counted among the Holy Unmercenaries — the physician-saints who healed freely for the love of Christ — and is sometimes called “the all-merciful.” This memory, however much its particulars have been adorned over the centuries, preserves a true and edifying image: that of a healer who saw in the sick the person of his Lord.
His veneration
Devotion to Saint Pantaleon spread early and widely, and he came to be numbered among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the company of saints invoked for protection in sickness and trouble. He is venerated especially as a patron of physicians and of those who are ill, and his name is held in particular honour in Venice, in Ravello, and across the Christian East. His feast invites the faithful to honour the martyrs who joined the healing of the body to the care of souls.

Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that through the intercession of Thy blessed Martyr Pantaleon we may be delivered from all adversities in body and cleansed from evil thoughts in mind.
